It is with sadness that the Limestone District School Board announces the sudden passing of Trustee David Jackson on April 12, 2018. The Board of Trustees and Limestone staff extend sincere condolences to David’s family and friends.
Trustee Jackson, who represented the districts of Portsmouth, Trillium & Meadowbrook-Strathcona, was a strong advocate for public education. In fact, Trustee Jackson attended a Board meeting just days before his passing.
“The passing of Trustee Jackson is a tremendous loss which will be felt across the Board and the City of Kingston,” said Board Chair Paula Murray. “David relished his role as a school board trustee and was always diligent in our collective responsibility to maintain and improve public education across our district.”
“From technology supports for students, to sustainability initiatives, David was passionate about serving every student,” said Murray. “In the coming days and weeks, we will be looking at how best to celebrate David’s life and dedication to Limestone.”
Director of Education Debra Rantz lauded David’s strong commitment to facilitate student learning and achievement for all students throughout the Board. “Trustee Jackson was a staunch believer in seeking out facts and information to ensure he was making informed
and responsible decisions on behalf of our students.”
Longtime trustee Elaine Crawford described her colleague as a thoughtful friend and trustee who had a desire to make a difference in the lives of students and his city. “David’s strong commitment to ensuring the success of all students, and his active participation at the municipal and provincial level will leave a lasting impact across our district. I will miss him greatly.”
Trustee Jackson was first elected to the Board in 2006. He served as Chair of the Board for the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 school years and Vice-Chair for 2013-2014. Trustee Jackson previously served as Chair of the former Property/Operations Committee and Audit Committee, and served on several Board committees including the Environmental Sustainability Advisory Committee. He also served as the Trustee representative on the Food Sharing Project and was the Limestone representative on the Ontario Public School Boards' Association.
Food Sharing Project Board Chair Brenda Moore, who worked along-side Trustee Jackson for ten years, said his loss will be deeply felt around its Board table. “David was deeply committed to the mission of the Food Sharing Project to provide nourishment for students to improve their readiness to learn. He so believed in our work together and his thoughtful dedication will be greatly missed. He always approached questions from the perspective of how can we make things better for students. ”
Trustee Jackson was in his third term representing the Portsmouth, Trillium & Meadowbrook-Strathcona Districts that include Calvin Park Public School, Centennial Public School, Limestone Community Education, Lord Strathcona Public School, Loyalist Collegiate & Vocational Institute, École Polson Park Public School and Truedell Public School.
The Limestone District School Board Education Centre and families of schools within Trustee Jackson’s district will fly their flags at half-mast until further notice. A Book of Condolence is available for signing in the lobby of the Education Centre from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday. The Board will share details of any memorial arrangements once they are available.
